| Sewell Jeter Griffith, Soprano, has enjoyed singing on stages in the USA and abroad. She has worked with conductors such as Placido Domingo, John Alexander, John Mauceri, Steven Mercurio, and Zubin Mehta. Her teachers were Jerome Hines, Beverley Peck Johnson, Shigemi Matsumoto, Bill Clarke and Fred Carama.
Among many appearances she has sung at the Hollywood Bowl as Frasquita with Jennifer Larmore as Carmen and with the Pacific Symphony singing Vaughan Williams' The Sea Symphony. Other credits include singing the title roles in Madama Butterfly, La Traviata, Suor Angelica, La Perichole and Mimi in La Boheme, Nedda in I Pagliacci, Micaela in Carmen, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Susanna in Le Nozze Di Figaro, Valencienne in The Merry Widow, Adina in L’Elisir d’Amore and Contessa di Ceprano in Opera Pacific's Rigoletto.
She sang Lee Johnson’s Symphony #8 with the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra in November 2008, Mr. Johnson’s Infinitudes: Symphony #7 with His Holiness the Dalai Lama speaking the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Atlanta in December 2008, the Tidings of Comfort concert at Old Christ Church in December and portraying Fiordiligi in Pensacola Opera’s Così Fan Tutte in January 2009.
Sewell, known to her friends as Susie, is a diverse performer whose range includes performances of Boulez' Sur Mallarmé I & II; Lee Johnson’s Four Concerts for Piano Trio and Soprano and Infinitude: Seventh Symphony; Kernis’ Simple Songs; Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Missa Solemnis, Dvorak's Stabat Mater; the Brahms, Dvorak, Mozart and Verdi Requiems; Handel's Messiah; Haydn’s The Creation; Orff's Carmina Burana and Strauss' Four Last Songs. Ms. Griffith has performed as soloist with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles, the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, the Choral Society of Pensacola, Pensacola Opera, the Pensacola Jazz Society, the Riverside Concert Opera, the Lauren Zachery Music Society, the Santa Monica Civic Symphony and at the Kennedy Center Theater in Allen Pote’s Seaplane. She has portrayed Maria in West Side Story and Nelly Forbush in South Pacific where she won the Corpus Christi, Texas Harbor Playhouse Sammy Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical.
Atlantic Records released a compact disk of Italian operatic aria set to rock and roll featuring Ms. Griffith, titled Angelica. In Florida Ms. Griffith released a CD titled Merry Christmas, Love Susie. An international release of Lee Johnson’s music featuring her voice with Former President Jimmy Carter narrating is forthcoming.
Ms. Griffith was the First Place Winner in the 1995 Metropolitan Opera National Council Western Region Auditions. She won first place in the 1996 Rehfuss Singing Actors Tournament Competition in cooperation with the Orlando Opera Company and is the recipient of numerous awards with many organizations.
Ms. Griffith resides in the panhandle of Florida with her husband Marty and their daughter, Ella Maria.
